Patient suffering from crush injury to the ankle with bone & soft tissue loss

This 26 year old school teacher from Nepal suffered a crush injury to the ankle with bone & soft tissue loss . A cross-leg flap had been done to heal the soft tissue wound and there was a shortening of 10 cms and a 3 cm gap with severe equinus deformity in the ankle.

Ilizarov was mounted on the femur and the tibial and foot

The Ilizarov was mounted on the femur and the tibial and foot. Bone transport is in progress and ankle deformity is slowly getting corrected. Femur is fixed to obtain better stability.

X-ray showing bone transport in progress

This picture shows bone transport in progress. In this famous method, the fragment of bone is slid down like an elevator and is filling up the gap in the lower level. Behind this bone fragment, new bone forms and helps to increase the length of the leg.

After treatment

X-ray after treatment
The limb lengths are now equal and the deformity completely corrected within 9 months of treatment.
