Hints to cope with Ilizarov Rx after surgery-5
Anger & Resentment Some patients frequently displace their anger & vent it on the Doctors & other hospitalstaff. Minor inconveniences are blown out of proportion & anger & resentment is felt. Ilizarov treatments are such that long hospitalization, frequent attention & a lot of work could be needed on your limbs by the staff. It would help if you have a little patience & understanding towards hospital staff. After all, be sure you will be achieving something significant - like a longer limb or an increased height or a corrected deformity - something that can change your life! Prof. Ilizarov was fond of saying. “We are not merely lengthening limbs & correcting deformities; but healing souls!” The relation between Doctor & Patient goes beyond the small exchange of monies. Duration of treatment & Removal of apparatus Your leg is not a machine & it is impossible to have a stringent time schedule for when the apparatus can come out. Usually with limb lengthening, the last stage of treatment may get delayed & final bone hardening may take longer than usual. This is a common problem & patience is the only thing needed. By this time there is usually no pain & a lot of activities are possible. Hence the best thing to do is to wait it out. Occasionally this may be speeded up with a good diet, with increased walking & exercises. Rarely early removal may be ensured by modifying the apparatus. This may mean adding some wires or pins. Please do not heart in the last stages or turn bitter or intolerant. Months of patience may be reduced to disaster by removing the apparatus even one day too early. It is wise to remember “It is better to remove the apparatus one month too late than to remove it one day too soon”. If the apparatus is removed too soon it may lead to bending of the new bone, or loss of length or a deformity. This may be corrected only by reapplying the apparatus! So please bide your time & be patient. You have come so for - you should not spoil anything in a hasty moment. Please Read again and help us to give you a good RESULT!
